This week we were delighted to host the 50th Annual WineGB West Competition here at Langham Wine Estate. 28 producers from Wiltshire to Cornwall entered 101 wines ranging from White Sparkling to Still Red, and these wines were tasted blind by our expert panel of judges on Monday 13th September, before the members came from across the South West to the Members Day on the Tuesday. Our Culver Classic Cuvée was the star of the show, taking away not 1, but 2 trophies!
The judging panel was made up of a range of experts from all corners of the wine trade:
- Renowned wine buyer, consultant and writer, Angela Mount (Chair of Judges)
- CEO of WineGB, Simon Thorpe MW
- Wine Writer and Presenter, Susy Atkins
- Assistant Winemaker at Black Chalk Winery, Zoe Driver
- Head Sommelier at Casamia Restaurant, Tom Lakin
- Owner of Le Vignoble Wine Shops, Yannick Loué
The judging panel split into 2 teams and spent over 8 hours meticulously making their way through the wines, which were split into categories such as Sparkling Rosé, Bacchus, Unoaked Dry White Wines etc.
By the afternoon, they had whittled the wines down to the entries from each category that were to be awarded a Gold or Silver Medal. Later on, the 2 judging teams then came back together to deliberate and discuss what the final results would be and who would be awarded the prestigious trophies!
On Tuesday, members from across the region came along to enjoy a day of catching-up after a long while. Members shared their predictions for this years’ harvest, tasted each others wines, and of course waited to hear the much anticipated results!
