It’s official – English Sparkling wine has beaten top Champagne brands in this years’ international wine competition. Dorset wine maker, Langham Wine Estate has just won one of the most prestigious awards a winemaker can win – the International Wine & Spirit Competition Sparkling Wine Producer of the Year 2020.
Chosen from over 700 entries including many of the major champagne houses, the Langham Wine team are delighted to have been recognised for the exceptional quality of their range of sparkling wines.
Last year’s winner was world-renowned Champagne producer Veuve Clicquot, highlighting the standard of entries. The IWSC Producer of the Year is one of the largest competitions of its kind. The trophy for Sparkling Wine Producer of the Year is awarded to the producer who demonstrates quality and consistency across its range, after taking the average score from a producer’s wines. This year, our Blanc de Blancs 2015 was awarded a Gold Medal and the rest of the range were all awarded Silver Medals!
Established in just 2009, Justin Langham planted a vineyard, on 30 acres of farmland just outside Dorchester. With a south-facing aspect, chalk soils and a unique micro-climate the vineyard was perfect for growing the classic Champagne varieties – Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. Being a single estate vineyard means using grapes only grown on Langham’s Dorset vineyard. Grapes are hand harvested and picked at optimum ripeness. We feel that our low-intervention approach to both grape growing and wine production sets us apart from a number of producers in the UK at the moment. We strive to minimise our environmental impact and produce quality wines that reflect the terroir. The wines are fermented with natural yeasts, not filtered or fined, and a high percentage of oak vessels are used for fermentation and maturation.
The English wine industry is growing from strength to strength with more vineyards being planted year on year. As English wines continue to grow in popularity, and more people are supporting local and buying British, visitors are welcome to tour the vineyard and enjoy a tasting of our award-winning wines.
